The Case for Porcelain in a Georgia Kitchen
Porcelain is a sintered surface — mineral powder pressed and fired until it is dense the whole way through. The result is the most heat- and UV-tolerant material we fabricate, and it is why porcelain is our first recommendation for an outdoor kitchen in the Georgia climate, where a covered patio still sees months of heat and humidity.
Indoors, porcelain is chosen for two things: very large format sheets and a genuinely non-porous face. A single porcelain slab can run the full width of a wall as a backsplash with no grout line anywhere in it.
What to know before you choose it
Porcelain is typically thinner than stone, and the decorative pattern is on the surface layer, so an exposed edge is finished with a mitre rather than a heavy bullnose profile. It is also harder to cut and drill than quartz, which is exactly why it should be fabricated by a shop that does it regularly rather than occasionally.
Where Porcelain Earns Its Place
- Outdoor kitchens and grill surrounds. UV stable, so the colour does not shift over a Georgia summer.
- Full-height backsplashes. One sheet from counter to upper cabinets — nothing to re-grout, nothing to scrub.
- Fireplace surrounds and feature walls. Heat tolerance plus large format makes it straightforward.
- High-traffic bathrooms. Non-porous and unaffected by cosmetics and cleaning products.

Porcelain vs Quartz vs Granite
Short version: choose porcelain if the surface will see direct heat or sunlight, or if you want a seamless full-height splash. Choose quartz if you want a repeatable pattern across a large indoor kitchen with zero maintenance. Choose granite if you want a natural, one-of-a-kind slab and do not mind sealing it periodically.
All three are fabricated and installed by the same team from our Norcross shop, so if you change your mind between materials during slab selection it does not change who is doing the work.
Porcelain Countertop FAQs
Can I put a hot pan directly on porcelain?
Porcelain tolerates heat better than any other surface we fabricate. We still recommend a trivet as a habit, because thermal shock at a cut-out edge is a different risk from surface heat.
Does porcelain scratch?
It is very hard, but no surface is scratch-proof. Use a cutting board.
Can porcelain be used outdoors in Georgia?
Yes — it is the material we most often recommend for covered outdoor kitchens because it is UV stable and non-porous.
Is porcelain more expensive than quartz?
It depends entirely on the colour and the slab, and on how much edge work the layout needs. We quote on your actual measurements rather than a per-foot headline number.
