WHY GRANITE

Natural Stone, and Why the Slab Matters More Than the Sample

Granite is quarried, not manufactured. Two slabs of the same named granite can look meaningfully different, and a 4-inch sample chip tells you almost nothing about how the movement will run across a nine-foot island. This is the single most common source of disappointment in granite projects, and it is entirely avoidable: pick the actual slab.

That is why our yard is set up for you to walk it. You see the whole slab, in daylight, and we mark which section of it becomes your island.

CARE

Sealing, Heat and Everyday Use

Granite is porous, which is the practical difference between it and quartz. A sealer fills the surface porosity so spills sit on top long enough to be wiped. How often it needs redoing depends on the specific stone — some dense granites go years, some lighter ones want it annually.

The simple field test: put a few drops of water on the counter and leave them for fifteen minutes. If the stone darkens where the water sat, it is time to reseal. We will show you how to do it; it takes about twenty minutes for a whole kitchen.

On heat, granite is more forgiving than quartz because there is no resin to scorch. It is still stone, so a sudden extreme temperature change at a thin section is worth avoiding.

PROJECT

Templating, Seams and Installation Across Metro Atlanta

Granite layout is a design decision, not just a measurement. Where a seam falls relative to the stone’s movement changes how visible it is — a seam that crosses a strong vein reads immediately, the same seam placed in a quiet field of the slab often does not.

We template after cabinets are set, plan the layout on the actual slab with you, fabricate in our Norcross shop and install with our own crew. Service area covers Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Brookhaven, Decatur, Tucker, Duluth, Johns Creek, Suwanee, Buford, Lawrenceville, Alpharetta, Roswell, Marietta and Smyrna.

QUESTIONS

Granite Countertop FAQs

How often does granite need sealing?

It depends on the stone. Use the fifteen-minute water test; reseal when the stone darkens where water sat.

Is granite out of style?

Uniform speckled granites from the 2000s are less requested. Dramatic, large-movement granites and quartzites are very much in demand. The material is not dated; a particular generation of pattern is.

Can granite chip?

Edges and cut-out corners are the vulnerable points, usually from a hard impact. Chips in stone can normally be filled and polished.

Can I see the slab before you cut it?

Yes — we prefer it. You select your slab in Norcross and we mark the layout on it with you.

Choosing the Right Granite for Your Atlanta Home

Granite remains one of the most requested natural stone surfaces in Atlanta kitchens because every slab is unique. Movement, mineral flecks and veining vary from block to block, which is why we encourage homeowners to view full slabs rather than small samples. Our team helps you compare granite patterns — from consistent, speckled stones that suit contemporary spaces to dramatic, high-movement slabs that become the focal point of the room. Darker stones pair well with white cabinetry, a combination we explore in our guide to dramatic contrast in white kitchens.

Granite Performance: Heat, Scratches and Sealing

Granite handles daily kitchen life well. It offers strong heat resistance compared with engineered surfaces, resists scratching under normal use, and with periodic sealing it shrugs off most household spills. Because natural stone is porous, regular resealing matters — our guide to stone porosity and sealers explains how to tell when your surface needs attention. If you are weighing granite against other materials, start with our comparisons of quartzite vs granite and natural vs engineered stone.

Fabrication Details That Make the Difference

A granite countertop is only as good as its fabrication. Our shop handles digital templating, precise faucet hole drilling, sink cut-outs and seam planning in-house. Popular upgrades include edge profiles from eased to ogee, mitred waterfall edges, and 2 cm or 3 cm thickness options. For islands and long runs, we plan seam placement so joints stay discreet.
